Gorgeous Girls In Supply Chain: Joanne Bricker
Welcome to our series celebrating the incredible women in Supply Chain and Logistics! In a traditionally male-dominated field, it's important to shine a light on the inspiring women who are making a significant impact. Through a mix of insightful and fun questions, we’ll explore their journeys, challenges, and successes. While we acknowledge the contributions of everyone in this industry, this series aims to elevate the voices and stories of women who often get missed. Let’s hear Joanne Bricker’s story.
What is your current role and company?
I am the owner of Jersey Girl Logistics and Easton Chemical.
How did you end up in the world of supply chain?
I ended up in the world of supply chain by answering an ad in the newspaper for general office help. I was 20 and a single mom looking for more stability. On my first day at Lee Transport, the stock market closed, and the phones went crazy. It was at that moment that I realized I was falling madly in love with trucking. My love grew deeper six years later when I entered the world of chemicals in 2008.
What is your favourite part of your work day?
My favorite part of the workday is resolving the challenging issues. Many times I get calls from colleagues who may need insight to resolve problems. The more complex the problem is, the more exciting it is to resolve. I also really enjoy cold calling. Talking to new, potential clients is always a lot of fun!
What is the least favourite part of your work day?
I enjoy most days. I would have to say the part I least enjoy would be when you feel as though something wasn't resolved to everyone's satisfaction. I find being clear about expectations helps in these situations.
What is a systemic issue in your part of the supply chain that concerns you currently?
A significant systemic issue in my part of the supply chain is driver parking. This has historically been a concern, but it has worsened since the implementation of ELD and HOS mandates in 2018. Additionally, the surge of registered carriers during the pandemic has further strained the already limited parking space available for drivers. Hazmat carriers are also not welcomed everywhere and honestly, shouldn’t be parking just anywhere.
How would you address it if you had the power, money, or influence?
To address the issue of limited hazmat truck parking, I would start by collaborating with local authorities and stakeholders to identify potential parking areas that meet safety regulations. Engaging with industry partners to advocate for dedicated hazmat parking spaces is essential. Additionally, I would explore innovative solutions, such as partnerships with businesses that have underutilized parking lots or leveraging technology to provide real-time information on available spaces. Creating awareness and open communication among drivers about safe parking practices would also be a priority to ensure their safety and compliance. I would also work with state and local authorities to secure funding to create and improve hazmat truck parking.
What is one piece of advice you have for young women entering your field?
One piece of advice for young women entering the freight broker industry is to embrace your unique perspective and voice. Build strong relationships, ask questions, and never hesitate to share your ideas. The industry values fresh insights, and your contributions can drive positive change. Remember, confidence is key—trust in your abilities and know that your perspective is valuable. My advice for young women entering the freight broker industry is to seek out mentorship and build a strong network. Connect with experienced professionals who can offer guidance and support. Don’t be afraid to advocate for yourself and your ideas—your voice matters. Embrace challenges as opportunities to learn and grow, and always stay curious about the industry.
What are your top 3 podcasts? (do not have to be industry related)
I do not listen to podcasts, but always have an audiobook playing.
Who are your top 5 women in supply chain to follow on LinkedIn?
How do you deal with creeps you encounter in your work day?
When I encounter inappropriate behaviour at work, I address it directly but professionally. I make it clear that such behaviour is unacceptable, and I maintain firm boundaries. It's important to prioritize a safe and respectful work environment, and I believe in standing up for myself and my colleagues. I’m a Jersey Girl to my core, so I am unapologetically confident, quick-witted, and fiercely loyal. That combination of resilience and boldness makes us Jersey Girls stand out, ready to tackle any challenge that comes our way!
What is your favourite way to unwind?
My favourite way to unwind is to find a peaceful spot, whether it’s a quiet park or a cozy nook at home. I love to immerse myself in yoga or simply enjoy some calming music. That time of tranquility helps me recharge and find balance amidst a busy day.
What have you recently changed your mind about?
I’ve changed my mind about the idea that life is a fixed path. I now see it as a living narrative, full of twists and turns. Embracing this perspective has taught me to welcome change and uncertainty as opportunities for growth and discovery. Each chapter brings new lessons and experiences that shape who we are.
