Series: Gorgeous Girls In Supply Chain

Welcome to our series celebrating the incredible women in Supply Chain and Logistics! In a traditionally male-dominated field, it's important to shine a light on the inspiring women who are making a significant impact. Through a mix of insightful and fun questions, we’ll explore their journeys, challenges, and successes. While we acknowledge the contributions of everyone in this industry, this series aims to elevate the voices and stories of women who often get missed. Let’s meet Charlie Saffro.

  1. What is your current role and company?

  2. How did you end up in the world of supply chain?

    • My husband was a freight broker early in his career and he eventually started a logistics technology company. In a twist of fate, I found myself working at his firm during a growth period where they needed to hire. I taught myself how to recruit and got scrappy to figure it out. If nothing else, I sat on a floor between sales reps calling on shippers and carriers, so I absorbed a ton of industry knowledge through my team and also through learning from candidates during the process. The company was sold in 2010 and after a few months of being a freelance recruiter, I started a third party recruiting firm where we focused on…you guessed it….Logistics, Transportation and Supply Chain!

  3. What is your favourite part of your work day?

    • Getting into my sweet spot and finding flow mode! While I love connecting with people internally and externally, I am a true introvert at heart and do my best and most creative work when I’m alone and have time to think!

  4. What is the least favourite part of your work day?

    • Whatever time the first person in my house says "What's for dinner?"

  5. What is a systemic issue in your part of the supply chain that concerns you currently?

    • Our industry is lacking Human leadership. As a Recruiter, I have a unique view on the employee and employer experience and see a huge disconnect in the global workforce and specifically in the Logistics, Transportation and Supply Chain industries. We need more employers leading with their hearts and prioritizing employees - knowing that is reflected in the way they show up and the work they do.

  6. How would you address it if you had the power, money, or influence?

    • There are many exceptional leaders in our industry who are setting positive examples, and we should continue to amplify their efforts and results. I would also encourage more women and diverse voices to share their experiences. Fostering a culture of empathy and inclusion is essential for any organization’s growth. While empathy isn’t exclusive to any one group, I believe that increasing diversity and minority representation (specifically more females in our industry!) is crucial for driving innovation and shaping the future of our industry.

  7. What is one piece of advice you have for young women entering your field?

    • You will never make everyone happy. Pick your battles and focus on the people and the output that counts and fulfills you.

  8. What are your top 3 podcasts? (do not have to be industry related)

  9. Who are your top 5 women in supply chain to follow on LinkedIn?

  10. How do you deal with creeps you encounter in your work day?

    • Well, there are different types of creeps and I've learned to trust my gut and respond appropriately. If someone tries to be a flirty creep, I am quick to communicate my boundaries and discomfort and distance myself. If they are jerky creeps that try to undermine me because I'm a woman, I usually kill them with kindness and use my empathy to force them to be vulnerable:)

  11. What is your favourite way to unwind?

    • Door Dash dinner + glass of wine + Bravo reality TV + my couch (doesn't get much better than that!)

  12. What have you recently changed your mind about?

    • Recently, I changed my mind about the importance of taking breaks throughout the day. I used to believe that powering through long stretches of work was the most productive approach, but I’ve come to realize that stepping away for short breaks actually boosts my focus and creativity. Now, I prioritize moments to recharge, which has significantly improved my overall productivity.

  13. 5 must haves to get you thru the day?

    • Coffee

    • A walk outside

    • Meditation

    • Yoga Class

    • Candy
